The membrane is set into vibrations by singing rather loudly through a cardboard pipe. Of anecdotal interest: the link to Hans Jenny's work, a pioneer in the field of cymatics. Also, a single cross section is influenced laterally (the plate does not fly apart), so it can be tricky to calculate exactly what the pattern will be if the distance from the source of vibration is not uniform. Because only certain parts of the plate are vibrating to create the tones, the parts that are not vibrating collect salt, revealing patterns. This is a phenomenon belonging to the field of Cymatics (the study of wave behavior).
